Culture Programme

The Culture Programme (2007-2013) of the European Union emanates from Article 151 of the Treaty establishing the European Community. The article provides that the Community shall contribute to the flowering of the cultures of the Member States while respecting their national and regional diversity and the same time bringing the common cultural heritage to the fore.

The Programme has a period of implementation of seven years: 2007-2013.

With a total budget of 400 millions euros for 2007-2013, the Culture Programme is jointly run by the European Commission (Directorate General for Education and Culture) and the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.

It is composed of 3 strands, corresponding to 3 different levels of intervention:

  • Support for cultural projects (strand 1);
  • Support for organisations active at European level in the field of culture (strand 2);
  • Support for analyses and for the collection and dissemination of information and for maximising the impact of projects in the field of cultural cooperation (strand 3).
